| Alcohol | Section Council | Dues |
There is always a great deal of controversy around alcohol in Alpha Phi Omega. APO is not a dry fraternity. The only time alcohol is prohibited is when a specific policy exists, such as at conferences, and as part of pledge recruiting or membership programs. The essence of these policies is for the chapters to protect themselves and their members by developing a set of standards for safe behavior.
This means that if a chapter is hosting a function which is designated to recruit members or at which pledges are required to attend there will be no alcohol present. Be aware events advertised at chapter functions are interpreted by the rushees as chapter events. Thus, if Jane throws a party and invites the rushees and announces it at the rush meeting, it becomes associated with rush by those rushees, and will be defined as a rush event, regardless of the phrasing, disclaimers, etc. However, events announced at general business meetings are not part of the pledging program unless determined by written or unwritten policy.
The Section 80 Council is composed of the president and one elected member of each chapter in the section. Past chapter presidents are also encouraged to attend but have no voting rights. The council, chaired by the Section 80 Chair, meets at least twice a semester and conducts regular business for the section between section conferences. Among other items, the council is responsible for the section treasury and for conducting section-wide events throughout the year.
Section 80 dues are set at $25 per year per chapter, due on 15 November of each year. Chapters must pay section dues in order to be considered in good standing.
